A Few Motorcycle Riding Tips for Beginners

Owning a motorcycle is thrilling and exciting, but it's also a significant responsibility. You want to be safe when you're riding a motorcycle to protect yourself, any passengers you may have, other people on the road, and your bike. Here are some motorcycle riding tips for beginners.

First things first, you want the proper gear when you're riding your bike. In the event of an accident, you want to make sure your body is protected. To shield your body, dress in a well-fitting, DOT-rated helmet. If your helmet doesn't come with a face mask, you should invest in a pair of goggles to protect your eyes from flying debris. In addition to the proper helmet, you should also wear sturdy pants, a heavy motorcycle jacket, or even a one-piece riding suit that can be worn over your clothes. Consider some riding gloves for ideal grip on the handlebars. Lastly, purchase some motorcycle boots that offer good tread. You can break these boots in by wearing them around the hose.

Once you have the right bike and the right gear, you want the right training. You can enroll in a motorcycling class to learn proper technique and road safety from a trained professional. After you've taken a few classes, you can start practicing cycling on your own. Try riding in an empty parking lot before you hit the open road so you have as much knowledge and confidence as possible before riding with traffic.

Beginners should ride alone on their bikes until they gain more experience. Riding with friends or family can be tempting, but doing so is different from riding solo and may create unsafe distractions. Get comfortable riding alone before inviting a friend to ride on the back of your bike.

Lastly, keep your bike well maintained. A well-maintained bike is a safe bike. You want to follow the recommendations in the owner's manual to keep your motorcycle running as well as possible for years to come. You also want to visit a local mechanic on a routine basis to be sure everything is running up to par.
