An Essential Guide to Servicing Your Motorcycle

If you’ve just purchased your first motorcycle—congratulations. You’ve just joined an exclusive club who have the capability of taking to the road whenever they wish. You might have an adventure on your mind, but before you plan that interstate exodus, there are a few things you should familiarize yourself with. Mainly, some of the items regarding routine maintenance need to be performed at regular intervals. This is how you get the most out of your bike and keep it on the road for several years.

Wheels

While many maintenance guides begin with the engine, we thought it was more pressing to talk about the wheels. After all, without them, you won't be going very far. One of the first items you should learn about is what the appropriate tire pressure is. Each bike is different, and it’s good to check the pressure once a week to ensure you don't have a blowout while traveling. And while they’re not a part of the wheels, checking your brake pads on a regular basis is essential. Motorcycle brake pads wear down much quicker than the ones on cars do, and faulty brakes can lead to an accident.

Fluids

Much like the car that’s sitting in your driveway, your motorcycle is propelled by an engine made up of a collection of moving parts, all working together in unison. Two fluids that allow this system to operate properly are coolant and engine oil. Coolant should be replaced sparingly, but it's essential to prevent the engine from overheating, especially if you plan on going on a long trek. Engine oil is what keeps the moving parts of your engine properly activated and cleans deposit that accumulate over time. If left unchecked, a lack of or dirty engine oil can cause severe damage due to friction.

Essential Tools to Have in Your Possession

No matter what your skill as a rider is, it’s a general rule of thumb that you should always have some tools with you on the road. A set of wrenches, a screwdriver, a tire pressure gauge, and even a repair guide will be of great importance. Life can be unpredictable, and being prepared is the first line of defense.
