The Difference Between a Moped and Scooter

Nov. 30 2022 Miscellaneous By Hap's Cycle Sales

We take great pride in our expansive inventory at Hap's Cycle sales. And while not everyone wants a motorcycle, ATV, or dirt bike, there are plenty of alternatives for those who want to enjoy the freedom and exhilaration that comes from riding. Among these options are scooters and mopeds. While both models are popular, the differences between the two aren’t known to a great many. Today, we’re here to separate the differences between the two of them and help you choose which one appeals to you.

Scooters

A scooter is a two-wheeled vehicle that has a step-through frame and footrest. The scooter was first introduced during the early 1900s and is powered by a small engine and makes use of an electrical charging station. Scooters are somewhat similar to motorcycles, but their step-through Fram is what sets them apart.

Mopeds

The term moped is a conglomeration of the words “motorized” and pedal.” A moped is a small vehicle with foot pedals similar to those found on a bicycle and is equipped with an electric engine. The key difference between mopeds and scooters is that mopeds usually tend to have bigger engines, higher speeds and are also equipped with turn signals and headlights.

Age & Education

The age at which one can operate a moped and the education required varies from state to state. The average required age is usually 14 to 16 years old. Some states require a license and completion of a course if the rider is under the age of 18. If you choose to ride a scooter or moped, you must obey all traffic laws and road signs.

Insurance and MPG

While most states require insurance for motorcycles and automobiles, not everyone requires these same rules for mopeds and scooters. That said, insurance is a very good cautionary measure for moped and scooter riders. Accidents can still happen, and responsible riding is what helps prevent them from happening. Mopeds and scooters can be very efficient in terms of mileage. On average, a moped or scooter can get 100 MPG, but they usually have gas tanks for 1-2 gallons of fuel at any given time.
